Preppy Style: Decorating for Bill and Muffy

class="alignleft" src="http://static.move.com/blogs/2010/9/0907NantucketBedding.jpg" alt="0907NantucketBedding Preppy Style: Decorating for Bill and Muffy" width="212" height="148" title="Preppy Style: Decorating for Bill and Muffy" />Back in 1980, many of my high school friends and I treated Lisa Birnbach’s Official Preppy Handbook as a bible, with our knee socks, Topsiders, and cords.  Thirty years later, Birnbach has teamed with designer  Chip Kidd on True Prep: It’s a Whole New Old World, which is released by Knopf today.

True Prep updates the classic for the electronic world.  Please, no texting at the table.

Preppy goes beyond one’s wardrobe, schooling, and career choices.  Your home, whether your beachfront cottage on the Cape, ancestral home in Greenwich, Connecticut, or somewhere in between, can reflect your appreciation for Brooks Bros., gin and tonics, and pink and green. Check out some of our favorite decorating ideas below:

Even if you don’t summer as a verb, you can add a touch of Nantucket to your home décor (see photo above).  Your color palette should include a range of whites, grey blues, and sands.  Mix wicker furniture with weathered, distressed pieces from grandma’s house or pieces bought at an estate sale.  Sisal rugs and nautical accessories such as faux shutters and model boats can be found at mass retailers or discount stores such as Home Goods.

Just about everything can be monogrammed, from bath towels, bed and table linens to barware and drinking glasses.  The Pottery Barn website is a great source for all things embroidered or engraved. Just remember, the surname or last name initial goes in the middle!
